12–Links of Independent Origination (paṭicca–samuppāda) – 'Conditioned Genesis', consisting of twelve factors:

1.    Ignorance (Avijjā)

Through ignorance are conditioned volitional actions or karma–formations (Avijjapaccuya samkhara)

 

2.    Activities (Saṅkhārā)

Through volitional action is conditioned consciousness (Samkharapaccaya vinnanam).

 

3.    Consciousness (Viññāṇa or Cetanā)

Through consciousness are conditioned mental and physical phenomena (Vinnanapaccaya namarupam)

 

4.    Mind & Matter (Nāma–Rūpa)

Through mental and physical phenomena are conditioned the six faculties (e.g., five physical sense–organs and mind) (Namarupapaccaya salayatanam).

 

5.    Six Sense Base (Saḷāyatana)

Through the six faculties is conditioned (sensorial and mental) contact (Salayatanapaccaya phasso).

 

6.    Contact (Phassa)

Through (sensorial and mental) contact is conditioned sensation (phassapaccaya vedanā)

 

7.    Feeling (Vedanā)

Through sensation is conditioned desire, ‘thirst’ (Vedanapaccaya taṇhā).

8.    Craving (Taṇhā)

Through desire ('thirst') is conditioned clinging (Taṇhāpaccaya upadaman).

 

9.    Grasping (Upādāna)

Through clinging is conditioned the process of becoming (Upadanapacaya bhavo).

 

10. Becoming (Bhava)

Through the process of becoming is conditioned birth (Bhavapaccaya jati).

 

11. Birth (Jati)

Through birth are conditioned.

 

12. Old Age, Sickness, Death (Jarāmaraṇa)

Decay, death, lamentation, pain, etc. (Jatipaccaya jaramaranam).
